Popular Science | Transmission Materials for Wet Electronic Chemicals –

2025-08-21
Wet electronic chemicals are indispensable key liquid materials in electronic manufacturing, widely used in integrated circuits (ICs), display panels, photovoltaic cells, and other fields. They mainly perform functions in wet processes such as cleaning, etching, developing, stripping, and electroplating.

In advanced semiconductor manufacturing processes, these chemicals have extremely high purity requirements, typically meeting the "electronic grade" standard, i.e., impurity concentration below 1ppb (parts per billion), or even reaching the ppt (parts per trillion) level, to avoid contaminating wafers or devices and causing performance damage.

1. Standards for Transmission Materials of Wet Electronic Chemicals

To ensure that wet electronic chemicals maintain ultra-high cleanliness during storage and transportation, the semiconductor industry generally follows the SEMI F57 standard formulated by Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI). This standard is an authoritative specification for polymer materials and components in ultra-pure water and liquid chemical transmission systems, specifying technical requirements and verification methods for ultra-high purity polymer materials and components in terms of mechanical properties, leachables, particle release, etc.

2. Selection of Key Transmission Materials for Wet Electronic Chemicals

PFA (perfluoroalkoxy alkane): The preferred material for high-purity transmission

Semiconductor wet electronic chemicals are extremely sensitive to impurities such as metal ions and particles, generally requiring metal ion content to be controlled at the ppb to ppt level and particles to be smaller than 0.1μm. The supply system must achieve zero pollution introduction, so the material of all components in contact with the liquid is crucial.

PFA, with its excellent resistance to corrosion by strong acids, alkalis, and organic solvents, has become the preferred material for transmission pipelines of most wet electronic chemicals except for some organic chemicals. Its inner wall is smooth, not easy to adhere to particles, and has an extremely low ion leaching rate. It also has moderate flexibility and transparency, facilitating installation and observation, making it an ideal high-purity chemical transmission material.

To meet the needs of advanced semiconductor manufacturing processes, wet electronic chemicals must reach higher purity grades such as G4 and G5. Traditional PFA materials also face challenges in performance improvement such as leakage prevention and low leaching. Currently, semiconductor-grade ultra-clean PFA tubes have become mainstream products in the semiconductor industry.

HDPE (high-density polyethylene): A key material for bulk packaging and supply

In chemical supply systems, in addition to pipelines, packaging containers also directly affect chemical quality. According to daily consumption, the supply system can be divided into tanker supply and 200L drum supply. Among them, 200L drums are widely used in most medium and low consumption scenarios due to their flexibility and economy.

In semiconductor manufacturing, the common raw material for 200L drums is HDPE.

Semiconductor-grade HDPE drums must have excellent chemical stability, extremely low metal ion leaching, and high cleanliness. In addition, they must have good mechanical strength, anti-aging performance, and light weight to adapt to frequent handling and long-term use.

Among various high-purity chemical packaging drums, G5-grade HDPE drums have the highest technical barriers. To meet their extremely high cleanliness and barrier requirements, the industry generally uses imported high-purity HDPE materials and combines special processes such as three-layer co-extrusion and hollow blow molding for production, ensuring that the products meet the strict standards of advanced semiconductor manufacturing for packaging materials.
